Match For Mikes Determination
Mikes scooter sits in the corner, along with
his three-wheeled bikeand thats where theyll stay, while hes
around the house anyway. Although its becoming more difficult for him to walk these
days, Mike doesnt like to rely on equipment to get him aroundhe walks where he
can.
That reflects Mikes determination, say those who know him best. Its his
commitment to be independent that has helped him be successful in life, despite his rather
severe cerebral palsy.
"If all our clients were like Mike, wed be the most successful program in
the country," says Dave Jones, executive director at United Cerebral Palsy (UCP).
Overcoming Obstacles
Today, that determination is being put to the test for Mike. Because, to a certain
extent, Mike is being forced to start all over again. And this time, the obstacles are a
little more difficult.
Mike worked 18 years in the banking industry, doing programming and data entry, and
only recently lost his job because of downsizing caused by the faltering economy. Still,
during a time when unemployment is high and finding a job will be difficult, Mike is
remaining enthusiastic.
Mike would easily qualify for disability and unemployment, but thats not
Mikes idea of making it on his own. Hes brought home a paycheck and paid taxes
for 18 years and thats how he wants it to continue.
"My goal is to find another job," says Mike.
Determined to Succeed
Thanks to two United Way-funded programs at UCP, Mike doesnt have to face his new
challenges alone. He is working with UCPs job placement service and is receiving
therapy for his walking.
Mike attends physical therapy twice a week at UCP, working to maintain his ability to
walk. The job placement staff is assisting Mike with keyboarding skills and helping him
with additional programs that will make him more attractive to potential employers.
"The Job Placement Program really puts the icing on the cake," says Jones.
"After Mikes years of education, therapy and hard work, being able to help him
find and retain a job thats both meaningful and financially
rewarding
thats the outcome were looking for."
Thats the outcome Mikes looking for, too. Eighteen years ago, he found a
job through UCPs job placement, and he knows he can do it again.
"They are helping me get an opportunity to work again and to stay
independent," says Mike. "I want to do as much as I can on my own."
With Mikes positive attitude and desire to be self-sufficient, theres no
doubt in anyones mind hell accomplish his goal and stay independent for many
years to come.
"Our United Way-funded programs provided enough of a hand-up to get him
started," says Jones. "But its Mikes drive and attitude that really
makes his success."
