Finding a place in the workplace
Phyllis Smith wanted more, not
only for herself but for her two children. She wanted a better job and better pay. Urban
League of Wichita, Inc., a United Way-funded agency, was able to help Smith get what she
wanted.
Urban League established a SelfHelp and LifeSkills Clerical Training
program to improve the employability of those seeking to enter and succeed in todays
workplace.
According to Robert Garrett, director of education and career development for the Urban
League Community Learning Center, the program, which began in 1995, is designed to develop
individuals typing and computer skills as well as other general office duties.
Back to school
Training also consists of courses to enhance reading, writing, grammar, math and
interpersonal skills.
"The program is open not only to those wishing to enter the work force for the
first time but to anyone wanting to sharpen their clerical skills or learn computer
programs," said Garrett.
Along with job training, Urban League helps participants put together a resume, sends
them to job fairs and even conducts mock job interviews all which are essential to
the job hunting process.
Smith, who was working as a grocery store cashier, heard about the program through a
friend who had just completed the job training course.
"I knew I needed to make more money," said Smith. "Urban League helped
me get started toward getting a better job."
Smith attended classes, while still working part-time, every evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
Monday through Friday. After three months all her hard work paid off and she graduated
from the job training course.
On the job
Currently Smith is employed with Adecco The Employment People.
"We were able to place Phyllis within three days of signing her on," said
Lisa Spangler, Adecco general manager.
According to Spangler, Smith has received excellent reports from all of her job
placement assignments. Her duties have included receptionist work, data entry and filing.
Some have even requested for her to come back said Spangler.
Smith is grateful to Urban League for helping her and her family.
"Before, I was on and off of welfare. Now I am able to earn good wages," said
Smith. "I recommend this program to anyone on welfare."
Smith now has aspirations of attending night school and taking accounting courses.
"I would like to thank Urban League for helping me improve my life."
